Government launches truth commission to probe Franco-era crimes

“Franco, a contemporary of Hitler and Mussolini, came to power after the 1936-39 civil war and ruled until his death in 1975” writes Stephen Burgen for theguardian.com. An estimated 140,000 people disappeared during and after the civil war, not including those killed in combat.The Spanish government says it will take responsibility for making a census of the victims of the civil war and the ensuing dictatorship.
